MISSION STATEMENT

Based on student-centered idea and with the core objective of developing students’ professional creative and practical capabilities, the school aims to build a comprehensive educational platform combining culture, art, science and technology, as well as a teaching philosophy with open, innovative, practical and global characteristics, in order to foster designers with global sustainability and environmental protection sense, multicultural vision and profound professional skills.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

As one of the earliest design schools in China, the School of Design of Hunan University was founded in 1977, and was qualified to confer Master’s Degree of  Art in 1993, and Doctor’s Degree of Art in 2005.  The Dean of the School is now the director of Chinese National Teaching Instructive Committee for Industrial Design Major and the educational chair of China Industrial Design Association (CIDA).
The School of Design consists of Industrial Design Department and Art & Design Department.  Now 8 professors, 5 associate professors and 10 lecturers are teaching 509 undergraduate students, 124 master students and 6 PhD candidates.  The School of Design is constituted also with Industrial Design Research Institute, Auto Styling Research Institute, and Brand Study Institute and equipped with Advanced Design Technology Laboratory and Media and Photography Laboratory.

Students of the school have participated aggressively in national and international design contests, and been awarded many honors, among which the Grand Prize of Eco-design contest in Biennale International Design 2002 Saint-Etienne, Golden Prize of Nagoya International design Competition 2004 and Excellent Prizes of DuPont, Osaka, Braun International design contests are dazzling.
The school takes active interest in international academic communication, and has invited experts and designers from the UK, US, Finland, Italy, Holland to give speeches and presentations for the students, and those from Hong Kong and Taiwan.  On the other hand, staff and students of the school have engaged themselves in various international design activities, and many of them have been sent to the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Finland and Denmark.
The School of Design, Hunan University is staffed by a group of highly-trained, research-oriented personnel, many of whom have experience from the US, UK, Denmark and Italy.  Prof. Zhao Jianghong, the academic leader of the school, is a cutting-edge researcher in the area of ergonomics and computer-aided-industrial-design in China.  Prof. Zhao gave speech in Global Sustainable Design Congress (Milan, Italy, November 2003) representing the Orient, and gave speech in World Technology Summit (UN Headquarter, New York, USA, 2002) as one of the five candidates for World Technology Award for Environmental Protection, and gave speech in World Design Conference (Soul, Korea, 2001) as the key note speaker representing China for the first time.  Prof. He Renke is now the director of Chinese National Teaching Instructive Committee for Industrial Design Major and the educational chair of China Industrial Design Association (CIDA). Prof. Long Zhaoxu, Dean of Art Design Department, won the first prize of  “Asia Star” and “World Star” packaging competition for China for the first time, and 6 of such prizes in total.  Prof. Wang Xu is member of AGI and member of NYADC, whose works were awarded many important national and international prizes.  Prof. Wang is enjoying a strong academic influence within graphics design community of China, and juried many important international design contests.
During her development of over 20 years, the School of Design, Hunan University has established the characteristics of  “combining science and art, coordinating industry, teaching and research”.  Among her advanced academic activities the research of computer-aided-industrial-design, the methodology and process of industrial design, product innovation and form image, ICAID/CAD/CAE/CAM, design history and theory, new media, brand design and management are representing the research directions and frontiers in China.  Because of her research reputation known in China, the school is commissioned many national research projects key to the ninth, tenth and eleventh “5-year Planning of National Development Program”, and established substance co-operation with many famous companies in China.

From “Mechanical modeling and Manufacturing Arts & Crafts Studio” to “School of Design“.

In June 1977, China’s former Ministry of Mechanical Industry sanctioned the establishment of “Mechanical modeling and Manufacturing Arts & Crafts Studio” at Hunan Unviersity and issued this in its No.559 Document.

In January 1982, the Ministry of Education authorized the establishment of “Mechanical Modeling and Arts & Crafts Department” and issued this in its No.17 Document; In autumn of the same year, the department started its recuitment with a specialty entitled “Mechanical Modeling and Arts & Crafts”.

In 1985, the department was renamed as “Industrial Modeling Design Department” with a renamed specialty “Industrial Modeling Design” and iniated its master program.

In october 1987, the department was officially renamed as “Industrial Design Department, Hunan University”.

In December 2003. the departement was officially renamed as “School of Design, Hunan University”.
