July 1, 2008 – 10:38 pmShantou University Cheung Kong School of Art and Design(CKAD), previously known as the Art College, was established in 2003 under pioneering reformation and innovative program restructuring. The School’s mission is to reform traditional design education in which technique-oriented apprenticeship skills are emphasized; and to focus on nurturing creativity and original thinking by highlighting the humanity aspect of training in design. Hence, the School invites renowned designers from the industry to strengthen the faculty’s professorship, thus widening students’ exposure at multitudinous levels and allowing students to learn creative theories from the masters in a diverse setting.
Under the leadership of the Dean, the reputed design master Mr Kan Tai-keung, the School have gathered a strong team of faculty members who are committed to reforming the education of design. The team comprises of internationally renowned professors and design practitioners. In addition, the School regularly invites top-of-the-line artists, designers and professionals of various creative disciplines to share their respective knowledge and experiences with our students in interactive settings of workshops/seminars. Through the application of multi-media technology, cross-cultural studies and versatile teaching styles, the School aims to inspire into students a sense of creativity and originality, and furthermore to encourage them to integrate what they have learnt into everyday living.
The School offers a full spectrum of in-depth, professional and diverse courses in art and design. With a teaching principle emphasizing both technical excellence and humanity science; as well as integrating Chinese culture with new concepts of the world, the School is strongly committed to providing professional design education that highlights creativity, and promoting individuals’ creative thinking. Students are also encouraged to constantly expand the realms of their knowledge. With these principles, the School regularly hosts international forums and design exhibitions, which features the industry’s latest global developments. Through hosting these events, the School aims to provide students with ample opportunities of international exposure in the hope of fostering a group of innovative design professionals who would take the initiative in impelling the development of creative industries for China and the world in the 21st century.
The goal of the School is to provide an ideal learning environment for every student. Apart from a library with a collection of approximately 10,000 titles of art and design, an art gallery and a 6000 square meter academic area, the School is equipped with state-of-the-art multi-media teaching facilities, which include Mac computer labs, photography studios, silk-screening rooms and ceramic studios.
