Welcome to a two-day seminar on Design, Olympics and Harmony in eastern China’s Shandong Province, where Confucius was born, at Shandong University of Art and Design.

Shandong University of Art and Design (SUAD)
Shandong University of Art and Design, established in 1973, is one of 31 art and design academies in China. It is situated in the historically famous city, Jinan. Nearby to the south is Mount Tai, and to the north is Yellow River. Cumulus Jinan Seminar
The scope of the seminar is to evaluate the relationship among design, Olympics and harmony. It comprises keynote speeches, Leader’s forum, exhibitions, cultural tours and a series of relevant programs.

During the Cumulus Jinan Seminar this July, you are going to experience a wide variety of programs.

THEME

Harmony stands for prosperity, peaceful coexistence and long-term development. As a common goal, the harmony between international community and cultural diversity has evolved into a shared vision of Olympic culture, making peace, friendship, equality, respect, and understanding go beyond the sports and competition and thus making us live in harmony. The harmonious space for Olympic Games cannot be created without design, whose ultimate goal is to realize harmony and perfection. What’s more, as a colorful context of poetic living, design is one of the paths to a harmonious world, and to the harmony between people and the environment. Therefore, harmony among people, between people and society, and between people and nature, highly regarded in traditional Chinese culture, not only contributes to Olympic Games and design, but also theoretically inspires the resolution of various problems of nature, society, and modern people.

Following the rapid footsteps of 2008 Beijing Olympics, participants from Cumulus member institutions will gather in July in the springwater city, Jinan, China to discuss relevant issues concerning design, Olympics and harmony, aiming at reconsidering the development of design education in the context of harmony and Olympics.

At present, cultural industry is booming across the world. The key issue of the cultural industry is design and creativity. One of the biggest problems with design education is how to revise its program and meet the need of the market. We should make it clear that what kind of design graduates is needed. Not only talents with practical skills but also design theorists with vision are necessary to guide the sound development of design and creative industry.
