LKK：A landscape in China Industrial Design

In recent years, with flourishing China medical device industry, many medical device manufacturers appear. Also after more than ten years’ development, the core of many products tends to be the same. Under this background, to seek larger development space, some manufactures start to explore various development paths ——add new product line, or increase advanced technology content, or seek corporation. When analyzing all the solutions, we find many manufactures start to rely on industrial design, trying to make progress on product design. Such revolution also leads to the advancement of China medical device industrial design, which is approved by rapid growth of many industrial design companies such as Newplan Design, Shenzhen ND Industrial Design Co., Ltd. This article only introduces LKK to present the progress of China medical device industrial design.
As introduced by Mr. Wei JIA, founder of LKK, LKK is founded in 2001, with continuous growth, it has more than 30 professional designers, and established corporation with SAMSUNG, NOKIA, LENOVO, HAIER and etc. In recent years, LKK won Red Dot Design Awards, international IF award, Red-star Awards, which makes LKK stand ahead.

One LKK’s success story in medical industry is a design for ECG monitor of Choice. The unique design of the ECG monitor is arch handle. Through appearance design it provides the guide for usage mode: one hand holding ECG monitor, steady operation because of electrode piece matching the arch of fingers and user friendly design for seniors to self-test. Since its unique design, this type of ECG monitor named ‘Touch’ not only won design patent, patent of utility model, but also won the appraise of agents home and broad. This product received tens of thousand unit order once it showed up in MEDICA in Germany. At the same time, it brings true honor for LKK. In 2007, LKK design won German Red Dot Design Awards and Red-star Awards (the best design award of China).

“Industrial design not only gives products the appearance and good visual effect, but also the comprehensive industrial design is the complete image design for company and products.” Mr. Wei JIA said, “The complete product design includes the safety, convenience, cost, technique, user feeling and etc. We believe that the real design shall commit to changing people’s living style and making people’s life more comfortable. Based on this belief, ‘Personalization’ becomes one of LKK’s basic design concepts. We tend to more consider people and people using product.”

Actually, industrial design takes small account of R&D, but appropriate design can bring unimaginable return since it provides the first impression to users. At present, with the rapid economic development, products in same category increase and the hardware and software in many fields tend to be the same. In this case, users will pay the first attention on intuitive sense of products, which is the truth forever. Therefore, manufacturers must have the perfectionism and pay more attention on industrial design which has been ignored before when pursuing innovation of core part of products. Only the perfect products from outside to inside can ensure the continuous success of companies.

When talking about future development, Mr. Wei JIA said, “our future direction is to become complete design consultant company, providing complete product line, solution design to improve style and level.” Mr. Wei JIA still has a dream, “actually, the style of industrial design is close to the country style. For example, north European countries are close to nature, U.S. is luxury and classic, Germany is precise and rational. Now Japan and south Korea industrial design has tend to mature and had their own style. But what is road of China design style? LKK always want to take a road with Chinese characteristics, it is necessary. China has a history for thousands of years, Chinese products must be input Chinese element to display Chinese culture, so products have international competitive strength, it is necessary for us implant Chinese style to product design. It is a long time to complete it, we need to work hard and explore”. Maybe, what Mr. JIA said is the goal that Chinese industrial design need to achieve.
